The Chinese herb Dong Quai (Angelica Sinensis), long used in Chinese medicine and becoming well known for its estrogen-like activity, is a close relation of Angelica Archangelica. Angelica has soothing aromatic qualities that help to create a relaxing environment. A well-known story tells a monk who dreamed that an angel visited him and told him to use the herb to cure plague-smitten people, hence the name Angelica. It is steam-distilled from the roots and seeds of the plant. One 2014 study of college students found that inhaling Angelica essential oil not only decreased their level of craving for nicotine, it also extended the period between craving.
