If you are not into DIY, just add essential oils to your favourite natural hair products.
HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS FOR HAIR
If it is your first time using essential oils, it is always good to do a patch test before you start using any essential oil. Because essential oils are so potent, they should be diluted with a carrier oil before topical application. Some beneficial carrier oils for hair include:
Argan Oil is an anti-aging oil, high in Omega-6 fatty acids as well as Vitamin E which is a powerful antioxidant. It is light and absorbs quickly, has a relatively very low chance of clogging pores. Argan oil conditions and moisturizes dry or damaged hair.
Jojoba Oil is not an oil, but a liquid wax. The molecular structure of jojoba oil is very similar to that of sebum our scalp produces. Because the nourishing oil won’t clog hair follicles, jojoba is an excellent conditioner for dry hair and is said to stimulate hair growth. It can also be added to hair conditioners to give you added protection against dryness, breakage, and split ends.
Olive Oil is a source of vitamin E and other antioxidants. It adds softness and strengthens hair by penetrating the hair shaft and preserving moisture. Because of its ability to hydrate and soothe the skin, working on getting rid of dry scalp and dandruff.

1. NOURISH DRY HAIR
Dry hair is dull, has a tendency to split and break, and is difficult to style. Nourish the hair with essential oils can help to seal moisture into the damaged hair. Using hair-conditioning treatment by adding 2 to 8 drops of an essential oil or blend of essential oils for your hair type or condition (refer to Essential Oils for Hair) to 30ml of honey, clay, or vegetable oil such as coconut, olive, or jojoba oil. Mix well. Work the mixture of your hairs and scalp and leave on for 15 to 30 minutes. Shampoo as usual.
If your hairs is dry, both hair and scalp will benefit from a hot oil treatment.
Hot Oil Treatment
Ingredients
- 20 mL jojoba oil
- 5 drops lavender essential oil
- 3 drops clary sage essential oil
- 2 drops cedarwood essential oil
- For: 1
- Preparation: 5 min
- Ready in: 5 min
Instructions
- In a small non-reactive bowl, combine jojoba oil and lavender, clary sage and cedarwood essential oils
- Stir well to disperse oils
2. PREVENT HAIR LOSS

Scalp oil treatments are useful for nourishing dry hair or scalp, stimulating hair growth or preventing hair loss, controlling dandruff, and regulating seborrhoea. You can also massage a few drops of a scalp oil treatment into your scalp or into the ends of clean wet hair instead of using a commercial hair conditioner.
Scalp Tonic
Add 2 to 8 drops of an essential oil or blend of essential oils appropriate for your hair type of condition (refer to Essential Oils for Hair) to 30ml of Apple cider vinegar, vodka, or pure grain alcohol (Do joy use isopropyl or rubbing alcohol). Mix well. Massage the mixture into your scalp. You can make tonics to stimulate hair growth or prevent hair loss, to control dandruff or seborrhea, or to regulate oiliness.
3. ANTI-DANDRUFF
The skin cells of the scalp mature and are shed quickly. Dandruff is caused by the build-up of these dead skin and in more severe cases, a yeast-like organism aggravates it. Many essential oils are naturally anti-fungal will help you to combat dandruff — relieving common hair care issues like flaky and itchy scalp. A combination of Exfoliating Dandruff Treatment and Anti-Dandruff Vinegar Rinse is excellent, as baking soda gently removes the flakes while the vinegar attacks the fungus.
Exfoliating Dandruff Treatment
Ingredients
- 250 mL distilled/filtered water
- 15 mL baking soda
- 3 drops rosemary essential oil
- For: 250 mL
- Preparation: 5 min
- Ready in: 5 min
Instructions
- In an 8oz (250ml) PET plastic bottle, combine water, baking soda and rosemary essential oil.
- Shake vigorously
- Pour onto hair and scalp and gently massage scalp
- Repeat until mixture is completely used up
Notes
Follow up with Anti-Dandruff Vinegar Rinse. Use twice a week.
Anti-Dandruff Vinegar Rinse
Ingredients
- 15 mL apple cider vinegar
- 3 drops lavender essential oil
- 3 drops tea tree essential oil
- For: 15 mL
- Preparation: 5 min
- Ready in: 5 min
Instructions
- In a 4 oz (125ml) PET plastic bottle, combine vinegar, lavender, and tea tree essential oils.
- Shake to blend
- In a non-reactive bow, combine the Anti-dandruff Vinegar Rinse with 2 cups (500ml) warm water.
- After shampooing, pour over hair to rise, using a bowl to catch the drips. Repeat once and rise with warm water
