Melissa is also known as lemon balm and bee balm. It is calming and relaxing and these are the properties the oil brings to both body and mind, making it useful in cases of agitation, nervous, anxiety and melancholy. Melissa, the “Elixir of Life”, is one of the earliest recorded medicinal herbs. Melissa essential oil is produced from the plant’s flowers tops and leaves, and as there is very little oil in those parts of the plant, Melissa is very expensive to extract and thus to buy. Much of the essential oil sold as melissa oil is either entirely synthetic or adulterated with lemongrass, a less expensive oil that smells similar to melissa but lacks many of its therapeutic properties.
