Palmarosa is a sweet-smelling grass that grows wild in tropical climates. Once known as Turkish geranium oil or Indian geranium oil, palmarosa was used for centuries by the Turks to adulterate the more costly Turkish rose oil. Indian doctors prescribed palmarosa to prevent infections and fight a fever. Palmarosa essential oil is steam- or water-distilled from the whole plant, which is part of the same aromatic family as lemongrass and citronella. It is widely used for making soap because it retains its perfume.
