Reopened for its spiritual and uplifting qualities, sandalwood incense and oils were (and still are) used in Temples to aid and deepen meditation. The Egyptians also used sandalwood for embalming. The oil is steam-distilled from the heartwood of trees that are at least 25 years old (and as old as 40), depending on the species. Today sandalwood is in a critical situation due to over-harvesting. Steam-distilling 25pounds of crushes heartwood yields about 1 to 1.5 pounds of thick, viscous oil. For centuries, men have worn sandalwood-based scents to elicit desired responses from women. Sandalwood is a recognisable base note in many perfumes and fragrances.
