The word derives from the Latin valere, meaning “to be in health” and valor, meaning “courage”. Held in high regard since medieval times as a cure-all, valerian is used for all manner of nervous tension and agitation. Valerian is most effective for use in conditions relating to nervous system. Steam distillation of dried valerian roots renders a golden essential oil with a fresh and penetrating odour of damp earth.
Calming, relaxing, tranquilizing, warming and grounding
Soothes nervous conditions such as tension, indigestion, headaches, and restless; sedate central nervous system; counteract stressful effects of the fight-for-fight response; soothes intestines and stomach cramps, menstrual cramps and strained muscles; eases pain and relaxes muscle spasms and decreases the distress of joint pains; promotes healthy bowel function and, may expels intestinal parasites; helps hyperactivity by calming and relaxing, this aid in sleep.
When added to facial massage oils, valerian can release tension and tightness in facial muscles that detract from the appearance and that contribute to muscle spasms and frowning. It may be useful for dandruff. Valerian can be used for perfumes and it imparts an enduring, earthy quality to fragrances.
Valerian had a strong warm, woody, earthy, musky aroma. It is profoundly calming, relaxing, grounding, and balancing.
Blends Well With:
Cedarwood, lavender, patchouli, pine, and rosemary
Dilution Ratio: Neat
- For age 0-1, use 1 drop of essential oil to 8-10 drop of carrier oil. For age 2-6, use 1 drop of essential oil to 2-4 drops of carrier oil. For age 7-11, use 1 drop of essential oil to 1 drop of carrier oil. And age 12 and above, neat application is safe
Apply 2-4 drops on area of concern
Apply to chakras and/or Vita Flex Points
Inhale directly or diffuse
Valerian oil is very potent. Use minute amount only – 1 drop of valerian in 1 ounce (30ml) of the carrier is sufficient.
Large doses can produce headaches, mental agitation, and delusion.
Do not use during pregnancy
Headaches, muscle spasms, and heart palpitations can occur after prolonged use of large doses
