Ylang ylang (its Malay name) means “flower of flowers”. It has a reputation for being an aphrodisiac; this is supported by the Indonesian practice of sprinkling a marriage bed with its flowers on the wedding night. For centuries, people in tropical women – famous for their thick, shiny, lustrous hair – have used ylang ylang in hair preparation for hundreds of years to promote hair growth by stimulating the scalp. It is one of the most used fragrances and fixatives in perfumes, colognes, cosmetics, and soaps. It is from the flowers (mainly the yellow ones) that essential oil is steam-distilled.
